What is a Primary Care Network?

A primary care network is a group of practices who work together to focus on local patient care. They’ve been around since 2019 and 99 per cent of practices across England now work as part of one.

With increased demand and a shortage of clinical staff, practices find they can provide greater, more personalised care for patients when they can work together on certain services or issues.

Meet Our Team

Dr Steph Bowler
Clinical Director

Hi, I’m Dr Steph Bowler and I’ve been a partner at Brunel Medical Practice in Torquay since April 2006. Primary Care Networks started in July 2019, and I have been Clinical Director since September 2020.PCNs offer the opportunity for groups of practices to work with each other at scale to improve patient care and reduce health inequalities. As a PCN we have been given funding to employ a diverse new workforce ensuring we have the expertise and manpower to improve the health of our population.Torquay PCN Board has a GP and manger representative from each of the 4 surgeries and we meet every month with alternate full board and managers meetings discussing strategy and operational matters. We also meet with Baywide PCN and Paignton and Brixham PCN every second Wednesday of the month as the Torbay GPs.We work together at scale on projects like the Covid vaccination service and we also have collaborated and pooled funding to run the Care Home Visiting Service. As part of my role as Clinical director I sit on the South Primary Care Collaborative Board (SPCCB) which meets every third Tuesday with clinical and managerial representation from all 8 PCNs that exist in South Devon. This is where PCNs interface with the ICB and ICS and can influence and feedback to the wider system on matters that are important for the practices we represent and the populations of patients we serve. As Clinical director I am passionate that the staff that work in Primary care are correctly funded and resourced to offer the highest standards of care to our patient populations. I believe strongly that when resourced properly Primary Care has the biggest potential to influence health further upstream and by focusing on prevention and working at scale, we have the best opportunity in reversing the trend of ill health caused by lifestyle factors.I am always keen to hear from all members of our PCN if they would like to get more involved in any projects or areas they feel passionately about.
